My Cartoon World~!

I very like to watch cartoon since I was small. Even until current, I still love to watch different types of cartoon from time to time. Sometimes before I come to work in the early morning, while taking breakfast, I sit in front of TV to enjoy the cartoon shows. One of the reasons I like about the cartoons is those characters in the cartoon can never die. Either they fall down from a very high place or “run” over by big vehicle or lorry, but still they can turn back to their original look and shape. Sounds little bit childish and unrealistic, but cartoons bring lots of joys to me.

The Simpsons
My most favorite cartoon since I was small until current is The Simpsons. The Simpsons are a typical family who live in a fictional "Middle American" town of Springfield. Homer, the father, works as a safety inspector at the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant—a position at odds with his careless, buffoonish personality. He is married to Marge Simpson, a stereotypical American housewife and mother.

They have three children: Bart, a ten-year-old troublemaker; Lisa, a precocious eight-year-old activist; and Maggie, a baby who rarely speaks, but communicates by sucking on a pacifier. The family owns a dog, Santa's Little Helper, and a cat, Snowball II. Each family member has different character and behaviors and they always do a lot of ridiculous and sometimes “unethical” stuff in their normal lives, but most of time certain values are conveyed through the shows. The series is a satirical parody of the middle class American lifestyle, set in the fictional town of Springfield, and lampoons many aspects of the human condition including American culture, society, and television. I have collected 10 seasons of its shows but in fact the 20th season already been released during this September, 2008.

Tom and Jerry Show
Another classis cartoon show that I love is Tom and Jerry show. The plots of each short usually center on Tom's (the cat) numerous attempts to capture Jerry (the mouse) and the mayhem and destruction that ensue. But Tom rarely succeeds in catching Jerry, mainly because of Jerry's cleverness and cunning abilities and because of Tom's own stupidity.

Interestingly enough, many of the title cards show Tom and Jerry smiling at each other which seems to depict a love-hate relationship rather than the extreme annoyance each displays towards the other in each cartoon. There are also several episodes where both of them display the genuine friendship and concern to each other’s well being. Not so sure the episode title, but there was an episode where both of them co-operate together to fight against a fierce dog in their house. Jerry was the one who giving the idea on how to escape and fight back the dog whereas Tom was the one who actually implement Jerry’s idea.

SpongeBob SquarePants
SpongeBob SquarePants is a sea sponge who lives in a pineapple under the sea, while his octopus neighbor, Squidward Tentacles, lives in a moai. SpongeBob's other neighbor and best friend is a pink starfish named Patrick Star, who lives under a rock. SpongeBob and Patrick live on either side of Squidward Tentacles, much to Squidward's despair. Squidward is constantly annoyed by SpongeBob and Patrick's antics. SpongeBob, who is absorbent, yellow, and porous (according to the title song), works as a fry cook at the Krusty Krab, a fast-food restaurant, with Squidward as the cashier. SpongeBob’s ambition is to succeed in his career -- “PROMOTION” but always most of time the promotion was given to Squidward instead of him where this makes SpongeBob’s life a suffering.

At a glance, the cartoon show may looks very childish and only suitable for small little kids, but for me it is a long line of cartoons that is designed to appeal to adults too. This has a lot to do with the absurd way underwater life and situations are represented, and with the situations, references, and words used, which younger viewers might not understand. Certain innuendos also are intended to go over younger viewers' heads. For example, SpongeBob tried to show his grandma that he was a mature adult by wearing sideburns and a derby, and listening to 'free form jazz' are jokes that most children may not able to understand. Numerous marine biology in-jokes are woven into the show. There are also many water jokes made. The most common one is the one in which you set a fire under the sea. There are also often complex ironic scenarios that need close attention. But still, I love this show very much!

Popeye
“Popeye the sailor man...”, “Popeye, help~ Help~!!”… Popeye! My favorite!!! I even have a small little game bought from Singapore which is based Popeye that fight with his biggest enemy, Bluto that always think of kidnapping his lovely and skinny wife, Olive Oyl. But sadly to say that, my game was broken when my small little brother “dived” it into the water. GONE! How sad was I!

The story actually is about a buff sailorman Popeye arrives in an awkward seaside town called Sweet Haven. There he meets Wimpy, a hamburger loving man, Olive Oyl, the soon-to-be love of his life, and Bluto, a huge, mean pirate who's out to make Sweet Haven pay for no good reason. Popeye also discovers his long lost Pappy in the middle of it all, so with a band of his new friends, Popeye heads off to stop Bluto, and he's got the power of spinach, which Popeye detests, to busk Bluto right in the mush. Meanwhile, the cute baby boy that we always see in the show, Swee’pea is the abandoned baby boy who is adopted by Popeye and Olive. It is a very cute baby boy.
